Teaching your dog to settle is one of the most useful skills you can work on. Unlike simply asking your dog to lie down, settling teaches them how to relax, disengage from what’s happening around them, and become comfortable doing nothing.
DOWN VS. SETTLE: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
A down is a position. Your dog’s body is on the floor, but they may still be alert, excited, staring at something, or waiting for whatever happens next.
A settle is a state of relaxation.
When your dog begins to settle, look for small changes in their body: their weight shifts onto one hip, muscles soften, breathing slows, their head lowers, or they disengage from the environment.
The goal isn’t to force your dog into relaxation. It’s to notice and reinforce those small moments of calm so your dog learns that relaxing is rewarding.
HOW TO TEACH “SETTLE”
- Start somewhere easy. Choose a quiet environment where your dog already feels comfortable.
- Wait for calm behavior. Rather than repeatedly asking your dog to lie down, give them an opportunity to offer relaxation on their own.
- Notice the small changes. A hip rolling to the side, a softer body, a lowered head, or a deeper breath can all be steps toward settling.
- Mark and reinforce those moments. Calmly mark the behavior and deliver a small treat. PupStrips work especially well here because you can tear off tiny pieces and reinforce frequently without interrupting the moment.
- Build gradually. Once your dog understands settling at home, practice in slightly more distracting environments. Move from the living room to the doorway, hallway, porch, and eventually places where more of life is happening.
If your dog is struggling, don’t correct them or keep repeating the cue. Make the environment easier and give them another opportunity to succeed.
